Cork Flooring: A Sustainable Alternative

Cork flooring is a sustainable alternative to hard wood floors which contribute to deforestation, because harvesting cork from cork oak trees does not kill trees! The cork tree is a type of evergreen oak tree, native to southwest Europe, Northern Africa and the Mediterranean region. They are also common in the western United States. Once they are 25 years old, their bark can be harvested by stripping it off every nine years. We have a cork floor in our den and stairway and enjoy its warmth, comfort and its contribution to a home’s healthy air quality.
